Ashley Summers Dies from Water Toxicity, Ashley SummersObituary
Worker at a Monticello daycare dies tragically after ingesting water
Ashley Summers, a cherished childcare employee from Monticello, passed away suddenly, shocking her family and the neighborhood. Her death serves as a tragic reminder of the possible risks of being intoxicated by water, an incident that has left her loved ones in shock.
An enjoyable and family-oriented Fourth of July weekend turned tragic for the Summers family. During their beloved shared activity of boating on Lake Freeman from July 1 to July 4, Ashley started to feel uncomfortable. She drank a lot of water in a short period of time due to a nagging headache and an unquenchable thirst.
Ashley Miller’s brother Devon Miller describes the awful series of happenings. He said, “She just felt like she couldn’t get enough water.” “She drank four bottles of water in just the first 20 minutes of the boat ride.” The results of this ostensibly innocent act would be devastating, though.
Ashley Summers tragically lost consciousness after arriving home and never recovered it. Water toxicity, commonly known as water intoxication, was blamed for her death on July 6.
The emergency physician at IU Health Arnett Hospital, Dr. Alok Harwani, explains the science underlying this uncommon yet critical disease. “Your kidneys can really only clear about a liter of water per hour,” he advises. Low sodium levels in the blood are caused by consuming too much water in a short period of time. Because of this imbalance, cells to absorb excess water, including those in the brain.
The result is disastrous, as Devon Miller explains. “It just stopped the blood flow to the brain and pinched off her blood vessels like a kink in a hose.”
Dr. Harwani gives important tips on how to avoid becoming intoxicated by water. When outside, seek out shade, alternate your water consumption with electrolyte-rich drinks like Gatorade and Pedialyte, and refuel with fruit and granola bar snacks.
The Summers family is hoping that by telling Ashley’s tragic experience, they will increase awareness and perhaps even save lives. This cherished daycare worker leaves behind a lasting legacy. Ashley Summers’ bereaved husband Cody Summers tweeted, “She will always be our superhero and my number one love.”
