After her parents got divorced, Maria moved in with her grandmother, who told her tales about her great-grandfather, who was hanged in the Minas Gerais state mountains. Her grandmother was born free as a result of the 1871 Law of Free Birth, despite having a slave mother.
Glória’s grandmother instilled in her the idea that freedom comes from hard work, so she chose to concentrate on fighting racism. Despite this, she never saw herself as a victim of racism and never supported any of the black movements.
Maria spoke with the Globo TV news executives in January 1970, and soon after, she was hired as a special reporter for Globo Repórter, occasionally co-presenting with Sergio Chapelin.

Before obtaining a position at Globo, Glória Maria performed two jobs for a period of one year, including weekends. She would arrive at Globo at 8:00 a.m. and leave at 8:00 p.m. for her shift. She would then go to pre-college preparation classes before returning home to sleep for an hour.
Maria died on 2 February 2023, in Rio de Janeiro as a consequence of a metastatic cancer that started in her lungs and spread to her brain. She was 73.
