WWE Had No Idea What Firefly Fun House Match Was When Pitching It To John Cena

John Cena’s last program in WWE was against Bray Wyatt. The two squared off in a Firefly Fun House match at last year’s WrestleMania event. That pandemic contest took place with zero live fans present, but they didn’t need them to present that cinematic match.

Den of Geek recently spoke to John Cena when the Firefly Fun House match came up. When WWE first pitched the idea to the 16x World Champion, they had a very simple explanation of what that match will turn out to be: “We don’t know.”

Whether they knew what was going to happen or not, the Firefly Fun House match still turned out to be a wild ride through John Cena’s career while diving into some alternate dimensions while exploring the idea of Cena joining the nWo.

“The Funhouse match was something I hold very close to me and maybe that’s another 45-minute interview for another day because that was kind of thrown in my lap at the last minute. And I remember specifically asking what a Firefly Funhouse match was. And the answer was literally, “We don’t know.” And in most performers that would cause panic, but I was just riveted by the open field that we could possibly create something special.

“Like you said, it took a lot of brave folks and a lot of hard work to make something that hopefully the audience understood. And at least if it reached one, we reached you and that’s good. And I’m sure in your critical television articles, I’ve been on the wrong end of an ass-kicking many times from you and that I totally understand, but I’m glad we at least got something you enjoy,”

John Cena has not been back to WWE since then, but he is not ruling out comeback. Things will need to be worked out with his busy list of Hollywood commitments.

He would have been at WrestleMania 37 if not for the pandemic. He was in Canada filming the Peacemaker spin-off series for HBO Max. That commitment and the required quarantine time to re-enter Canada caused Cena to miss the show of show.
